Shooting for the stars, photographer Jean Blais opened his studio in 1986 downtown Montreal. The old industrial building on Guy street appealed to Blais because of the 17 huge windows that bathed light in the spacious loft. Painted white from the floor up, a sunny day in the studio would be very inspiring for him. “Light is everything” says Blais. His unique approach to shooting Fashion editorials brought him rapid recognition.
Co-founder of Manoeuvres, Montreal’s 80’s cult magazine, Blais shot most of the photography and also directed many issues of the poster size magazine.
The quality of his work and his demonstrated creativity soon got Blais working for the advertising agencies. Eager to master new technologies and bring his production techniques to the next level, Jean Blais was one of the first in his trade to move forward into the digital age. He has gained a rich visual culture through an intensive period of creative work in both New-York and London. Well traveled, he has done productions all around North America and abroad. He has shot in Mexico, the Carribeans, Europe and North Africa.
His strive for quality, innovation and creativeness made him one of Canada’s best in today’s business of photography. 20 years later, the old building in Montreal is now gone but Jean Blais’s passion for beauty remains.
